As part of the commemorations marking the centenary of the birth of Júlio Pomar, the AMJP presents the exhibition “Júlio Pomar: Glue Does Not Make a Collage”, spanning more than seven decades of the artist’s oeuvre.

Starting from the idea of collage as a broad procedure, this exhibition proposes an expanded reading of Júlio Pomar’s artistic practice, from his Neorealist period through to the final phase of his life. According to Pomar, “I paint, cut out, combine, repaint or scrape, scratch, file, smooth; only then perhaps to do nothing more than cut out again, recombine, repaint, once more, and unsettle everything.” Pomar tests connections and modes of fitting together, just as one human body moves towards another, driven by desire or attraction.

The title of the exhibition derives from the appropriation of part of a statement by the German painter Max Ernst (“Feathers may make plumage, but glue does not make a collage”), which Pomar used in one of his texts, L’Écrit [The Written] from 1981.
